Respect and Recognition for Aboriginal People
Together, we aim to establish new laws that provide for improved recognition, assessment, protection and management of Aboriginal heritage in Tasmania. This will mean an active role for Tasmanian Aboriginal people in the protection of Aboriginal heritage.
The protection framework will be based on promoting respect and understanding of Tasmanian Aboriginal culture; and creating effective and efficient processes for managing activities that may impact on Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage.
Protecting and managing Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage:
- to respect the values of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.
- by clarifying everyone's responsibilities.
- by protecting and managing culturally sensitive information.
Empowering the Tasmanian Aboriginal people:
- to be involved in the protection, identification and management of their heritage.
- by recognising Tasmanian Aboriginal ownership of objects of cultural importance.
- by recognising that the Tasmanian Aboriginal people are the primary source of information about their heritage.
