Why Aboriginal Heritage is Important to Tasmania
Conserving Tasmania's Aboriginal heritage is one of the State's most important cultural issues. The Tasmanian Government has an obligation to conserve Aboriginal heritage so that it can be passed on and protected for future generations.
It is important for Tasmania's future that we understand and respect the heritage of the Tasmanian people, a history that stretches back thousands of years.
The Tasmanian Aboriginal people will be able to take responsibility for the management and protection of their heritage.
All people working their land, exploring opportunities for development or enjoying recreational pastimes, will have a fair and effective regulatory system to work with.
The Government will work with Tasmanians to find common ground on the many complex issues that arise in developing new Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage legislation. Protecting Aboriginal heritage has not kept pace with today's decision-making and environmental protection processes. The Government will include protection of Aboriginal heritage in the high standards that have been set for cultural development, economic growth and regulation of business activities in Tasmania.
