Tasmanian Aboriginal Heritage Legislation Meetings

Media Note: Media will be welcome to film inside the consultation forums from 12.45pm onwards today at the Tramsheds in Launceston.

Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania project managers Brett Noble and Vicki Wills will be available for comment from 1pm.

Consultation on the new Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage legislation began this week with a series of meetings with interest groups including industry, forestry, conservation, recreation, tourism and planning.

Tourism, Arts and the Environment Minister Paula Wriedt said the development of the new legislation will rely heavily on input from all Tasmanians - from the Aboriginal community, to political and business leaders and land owners and users.

"These meetings will help to develop clear and practical legislation in consultation with the Aboriginal and broader Tasmanian communities," Ms Wriedt said.

"Five regional public forums will be held around the State over the next two weeks.

"The forums are an opportunity for everyone to let the Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania know what they believe needs to be accounted for in the new legislation."

Ms Wriedt urged members of the community to read the information sheets in the consultation package and comment on the concepts presented.

Public forums will be held in Launceston, Flinders Island, Burnie, Strahan, and Hobart. Further information on the forums can be found in the consultation package.

People can also comment on-line at www.tahl.tas.gov.au, or by writing to the Project Team at the Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania, Department of Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts, PO Box 771, Hobart, Tasmania, 7001.

Comments on the consultation package should be made to the Project Team before 22 December 2006.
